ELIZABETHTOWN — An argument quickly escalated into gunfire on Tuesday, and both combatants were wounded.

Elizabethtown Police Chief Bobby Kinlaw said a call came in at about 4:45 p.m. that reported shots being fired on Martin Luther King Drive and, while officers were responding, dispatchers said an individual with a gunshot wound had arrived at Bladen County Hospital.

“Officers responded to Bladen County Hospital and met with the subject, who had a gunshot wound to his head,” Kinlaw said. “While at the hospital, a second subject presented with a gunshot wound to his leg.”

Kinlaw said the investigation showed that the two men — Gerald Bennett Thomas, 56, of Elizabethtown and Taquay Montez Newkirk, 22, of Whiteville — had gotten into an argument and began shooting at each other.

Thomas was struck in the leg and Newkirk was struck in the head. Both injuries are not considered to be life-threatening, and the two men were transferred to New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Kinlaw said officer interviewed both men and were given conflicting stories. He said the incident remains under investigation and charges are pending.
